Rheumatology is a specialty which deals with the study of Rheumatic diseases which include diseases of:
- Joints (Arthritis)
- Systemic Autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases (SLE or Lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Myositis, Systemic Sclerosis, Vasculitis, etc.)
- Related Disorders (Soft Tissue Rheumatism, Osteoporosis, Chronic Regional Pain Syndromes, etc.)
A Rheumatologist is a physician who specializes in the complex diagnosis and treatment of the above conditions. Many of the above conditions are caused by an aberrant immune system (that fights against the germs) and a Rheumatologist is also sometimes called an Immunologist.
